I am tucked away in the barn kitchen, quietly cooking while daughter

Is on a flight due to arrive in Belfast where she will deliver a lecture at the University of Ulster.  She hadn’t checked her diary before accepting the engagement but when she looked, last week, she realised that tonight is “bonfire night in Belfast” before the climax of the “marching season” on the 12th of July.  On “googling” the date I have learned that this commemorates the 1690 Battle of the Boyle when William of Orange’s army defeated the army of the deposed King James II of England.  Interestingly a recent study shows that university enrolment of Protestant students is far, far lower than that of Catholic students in Northern Ireland.  Maybe less marching and more studying would be a good idea? Me? I’ll stick to cooking.
