Some weeks ago grandson was staying overnight with us (always a treat to have grandchildren on their own without the parents!) and I suggested that he went out to join grandpa in the poly tunnel and sow some carrot seeds in a box. He sowed the seeds, lightly covered them with earth and watered them and then, the nest day, he went home. On subsequent visits he has seen the carrots beginning to show as green fern like plants in the wooden box. This week the first carrots were big enough to pull and I sent grandson some photographs by email.

I also told him that they tasted delicious, sweet and crisp. He was indignant that we had eaten “his carrots” when in fact we had just tasted one of them. The next day, on his way home from London, grandpa called in to see grandson with a box of eggs, a box of strawberries and four of “his carrots” which he ate straight away!
