This week I have set myself the task of getting the asparagus bed under control. There are dandelions and grass and nettles and creepers running riot but I am slowly unearthing the asparagus spears and at the far end of the area uncovering spreading strawberry plants. As I was pulling grass out of the strawbs I spotted a few ripe berries and, as I moved the plants aside, discovered more and more ripe fruits. So many that it was time to pick and make jam – a pleasant diversion from weeding and picking the lethal gooseberries.
