Yesterday we separated Tufty and Wiggle from the ewes.  So far, so good.  Then we fenced off the cows from Tufty and Wiggle assuming that the naughty calves (who usually ignore the electric fencing and walk through it at will) would cross over to their mothers when they wished to feed.  Wrong!  For the first time the calves have stopped traversing the wire and all night long the cows were lowing, trying to encourage their offspring to come and suckle.  As much as the calf wants to suck the mother wants to give suck.  So true.  This morning I undid the hurdles and let the mothers into the quarter with the calves and Wiggle and Tufty.  The mothers went straight to the sheep feeder to chew on hay and the calves immediately latched onto their mothers’ udders and had a long overdue feed.  Sorry……we do try our best but sometimes we make mistakes.
