Some of you may have heard, from reports on the radio and television, that Avian Flu is sweeping across Europe destroying thousands of birds. The Chief Veterinary Office has issued the following edict with which we are preparing to comply…..
“The Chief Veterinary Officer has declared a Prevention Zone to help protect poultry from a strain of Avian Flu in Europe.
The Government Chief Vet has declared a Prevention Zone introducing enhanced biosecurity requirements for poultry and captive birds, helping protect them from a strain of avian flu circulating in mainland Europe.
The zone covers England and will remain in place for 30 days. Declarations have also been made by the Scottish Government and Welsh Government.
Keepers of poultry and other captive birds are now required to keep their birds indoors, or take appropriate steps to keep them separate from wild birds.”
To this end Jeremy and Chris spent this morning strawing up the polytunnel, in which the hens will all live for the next month, and trying to make one of the field shelters “duck proof”. The geese will come back and live in the duck run and if any of them complain we will have to tell them that it is “the law”! We will spend this evening moving all the birds and it won’t be easy to catch and carry each and every one to their new homes. Anyone up for helping?
Sorry, I should have said ‘avian’ not ‘asian’ yesterday! Sad for you and the birds that this should come about but better safe than sorry. My sister in law has only two chucks and appeals for advice on Facebook produced only ‘Tikka Masala’ from her son!
I wish I could help. Good luck. Hope geese/ducks etc are well behaved.
