It is “tidy up time” in the garden, the greenhouse and the polytunnel. Time to pick the last of the outdoor and indoor tomatoes and gather up the canes and store them away for next year. Time to put the pots on the pallets near the shed and feed the remains of the plants to the cows and sheep. I picked the last cherry tomatoes this morning and they are now sitting on trays in the kitchen where they will ripen and be used in cooking and in salads. I made a soup with two butternut squashes today and there will be no more until late summer 2017. We won’t be downhearted and will make the best of the winter vegetables outside – the leeks, the celeriac, the carrots, beetroot and turnips and the bags of stored potatoes and boxes of jack be little pumpkins, the kale and tatsoi and the dried beans, frozen and bottled fruits and vegetables and plaited strings of onions. We won’t starve!
