The Bramley tree has produced pounds and pounds of perfect, tart green apples. For some weeks we have been eating crumble (some laced with ripe victoria plums from the tree in the orchard) and we have eaten stewed apples and given bagfuls away. Yesterday we wrapped newly picked, perfect specimens in newspaper and carefully packed them in a box, hoping they will keep for a month or two. Still there are more on the tree and this morning mum told me of an apple cake recipe that sounded delicious. I have just removed two cakes and a crumble from the oven. For the sake of any guests I decided to “try” a small slice. Verdict – perfect with a cup of tea. And thanks due to mum’s friend Leila who persuaded us to used golden caster sugar for all our baking and also added sultanas to this apple cake recipe.
