As some of you will know, Jeremy and I were involved in restoring a synagogue in Ukraine, a cemetery in Poland and supporting a school in Lviv. As we moved away from London we made our exit from fundraising and our last trip to Ukraine was in April 2013. But it is not easy to break such strong ties with roots and communities and this morning Michael Mail is visiting The Gables to discuss the new organization “The Foundation for Jewish Heritage”. The Foundation will map Jewish Heritage sites with an initial focus on Europe. For more information take a look at the website http://www.foundationforjewishheritage.com

Lord Finkelstein is a Facebook friend but looking at members of the International Advisory Panel I noted the name of Tony Kushner, Professor of the History of Jewish/Non Jewish relations at the University of Southampton. When I was there, one of the academics at the Parkes Institute gave a fascinating talk on his ancestor, Joseph Abraham Hyman, who survived the sinking of the Titanic. When he returned to Manchester he established the delicatessan, Titanics; still going strong today where you can order smoked salmon online. What I learned from that was, for all the hype about Titanic as a luxury liner, it was essentially a ship to transport emigrants from Europe to the New World. How do we become involved with restoration of Jewish cultural sites?
