The small town of St Neots contains “mini” versions of all the high street shops as well as a selection of independent emporiums and a variety of charity outlets. The small museum offers childrens’ activities in the holidays and various historical tours of the town. The bridge over the Great River Ouse boasts a pub at the town entrance and many other hostelries in other streets. My favourite place is the St Neots Public Library which, today, is the first building mum and I visited so that she could sit and read the papers whilst I walked to do the shopping. The staff in the library are not only helpful but often help me to negotiate the catalogue so that I can order newly published books. This morning two librarians scoured the shelves for a copy of The Miniaturist – which they found. Mum then sat in the comfy chairs with a copy of The Guardian. There were three other people in the sitting area and I knew that when I returned mum would be friends with all of them. Indeed she was and not one page of the paper had been turned!

You are lucky to have a proper library. Local authorities are closing them down all over. Yet some years ago in Bruges I spent an afternoon in their reference library reading books on Sir Frank Brangwyn!
