Cows eat trees and only the tallest trees survive

We inherited a field planted with young trees.  Our predecessor did not own animals and the grass grew to waist height and then he planted a selection of trees in random places. He didn’t have to consider that cows and even sheep are adept at reaching branches and pulling them off so that they can chomp on the leaves.  A few of the trees have been destroyed by the livestock but the taller ones are thriving and submit to the occasional mauling by Lucy and Beattie.
