This plump game bird, the partridge, is not native to England but was introduced into East Anglia in the eighteenth century from southwest Europe. Like many immigrants it is now a naturalised species and part of the landscape.  It is especially common in Eastern England where it likes the sandy soil and feeds on seeds and roots and the young also eat insects.
