I was thrilled to turn off the soulless M1 onto the A421 before midday and then onto the country road from Great Barford towards home. As with Bushmead Road (on the way from Colmworth to St Neots) there is a resident buzzard that guards their stretch of country road jealously. As I drove along Barford Road I spotted the buzzard in a tree to my right and pulled in to the verge to take a photograph. Just as I was opening my iPad the bird of prey swooped down from the treetop and onto the grass a few feet in front of the car. It grabbed a rodent in its talons and took off to settle in the field and enjoy it’s midday meal.

It was a thrilling sight for me if not for the victim. At Roothams Green I turned into the drive just as our resident killer, Mabel, was walking along the lanenthrough the front gate holding a near dead mouse in her mouth. It may be quiet on the roads in comparison with London traffic but there is plenty of murder and mayhem on these country lanes!
