In reality a thistle but much prized as a delicacy, the globe artichokes ( grown from seed by Jeremy) thrive in The Gables soil. Harvest is supposed to be for four months but we have been collecting globes since the end of March and they have come back again in recent weeks providing tender leaved plants to cook and dip in mayonnaise or vinaigrette. The sheep are pleased to eat any discarded shoots that I pull out as I prepare the beds for autumn.
