Roadside foraging along the country lanes

There are so many apple trees heavy with fruit and a lot of them sit by the side of country lanes where the chance of lead residues is less than alongside busy roads and highways.  I stopped along Mill Road today to pick eight red and green apples from one of these trees and friends of mine have told me of cherry trees that they know which are only picked by roadside foragers.  Like hedgerows full of blackberries, rosehips and sloes this is truly “food for free” and it would be a great pity to waste such wonderful gifts of nature.

  1. Don’t forget the crab apple trees along the concrete road alongside the brook below Mill Road. Also the wild damsons – though not as many this year as sometimes! You will definitely need more freezer space – like me!
