For the past two days one of the geese has been sitting in the corner of the goose house on her 15 ginormous eggs. I tried to take a photograph of this broody goose with her long, slender neck, yellow bill and clear blue eyes but at the first tiny hiss from her throat the gander rushed headlong up the orchard, wings outstretched and flapping and honking fit to burst. A couple of months ago the gander thought I was going to hand feed him some corn. Instead I threw it on the ground so that all the birds would have a chance to peck at the corn treats. The gander cornered me by the gate and dug his sharp little teeth into my calf muscle and held on tight. It took all my strength to prise him off without resorting to putting my hands around his thick, white neck. I bore the bruise on my flesh for a week or more. I am not prepared to risk a mauling by taking a photo of his broody goose. Let her sit quietly and we will all go about our business peacefully and with mutual respect…….for the next 33 days.
