For over a week a “drumming” sound has been echoing across the field from the trees on Wilden Road. The greater spotted woodpecker is marking its territory by tapping out a roll call on a tree trunk. Last year we sat by the pond and watched a pair of ‘peckers feed their voracious and vocal offspring until, one day, they flew the nest. We hope they will return and breed again. The early signs of spring are everywhere even though cold weather may be just around the corner.
