The Tale of the Bedford Pippin

Our friend and neighbour told us of an apple variety that was very nearly lost and, by chance, rediscovered in the garden of an elderly lady in the nearby village of Bolnhurst.  The lady stated that the tree was a Bedford Pippin and had been planted by her late parents when they moved into the house, possibly one hundred years ago.  After a lot of list searching the Bedfordshire Nursery, Laxtons, confirmed that such a tree variety existed and they set about grafting from the Bolnhurst tree to save the apple for us all.  We decided to put an order in with Laxtons for a Bedford Pippin as well as another local variety, the Duchess of Bedford, and we planted them in the orchard yesterday.  If we wait a few years then we hope to host a Bedfordshire Apple tasting party…..all welcome.
