Hard frosts, hay and geraniums

This morning there was ice in the duck bath and the ground was frozen hard. The cows and sheep waited by the gate as I wheeled a bale of hay into the field and spread it out over the frosty grass.  Even the most timid sheep come to eat the hay and have also started to come close to the fence in the evening to eat their concentrates from their feeding troughs.  Hunger makes them bold!

In view of the cold nights, I piled the wheelbarrow with plots of geraniums and have put them in the polytunnel for safekeeping over the winter.  They have given us colour and pleasure in equal measure and in return I will “put them to bed” during the cold months of winter.
