Hedgerow delights

The dishes of blackberries that we picked from the hedgerows yesterday have now been mixed with apples and pears from the trees and cooked with some spoonfuls of The Gables plum jam.  The rest of the berries and apples have gone to make a crumble to be frozen and enjoyed in the winter when summer and autumn fruits are a distant memory.

  1. Dear Gill,

I hope this reaches you.. I’m not sure! I attempted to post on the ‘comment’ section but it didn’t seem to work..

I wanted to say thank you for your sumptuous post. As it happens I was reading Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘Blackberry Picking’ this morning – one of my favourites even though it ends on a sharp, rather painful note: he perfectly captures that bitter/sweet experience of ‘desire’ and ‘loss’. It matched my sentiment today .. then along came your delightful dish to remind me that sometimes one simply has to wait.. to wait until the right time to enjoy the fruits that are already in store; albeit suspended in deep freeze until the right time comes! Thank you heartily.

Seamus Heaney’s Blackberry Picking for your delight: (sorry about the sound.. just turn it down so you can read!) http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/blackberry-picking-3/

    Much love, Emer
