I heard a shout from the courgette patch as Jeremy was cutting today’s crop of vegetables. I called out “what’s the matter?”, and rushed over to find Jeremy staring at two enormous marrows that had escaped his knife before the weekend.

They reminded me of the marrows (a matching pair) with which he won the village show marrow class in Sandford Villlage, Devon when we lived there over 35 years ago. He also won the brown egg competition with six large eggs from our Marran hens. But the local village fayre here in Colmworth does not (yet) have a vegetable show.
Despite the traumas of rabbits stealing and eating our newly sown root crops and the more mature celery and brassicas, the soft hearted gardener released a baby rabbit from the netting in which it became ensnared yesterday evening. I knew that he wouldn’t be able to bash it over the head, much less shoot it! We will just have to share the garden produce…….some for them and some for us.
It’s a pity that they don’t eat marrows!
Ah! The Sandford Revels…….
Indeed, they were happy times.
